13 Mar RM600 bank note fetches RM78k at Bank Negara auction
RARE, large-sized RM600 commemorative banknotes measuring 370mm x 220mm were featured at the seventh Malaysian Banknotes with Special Serial Numbers Auction held in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday, with one selling for RM78,000.
Conducted by Bank Negara’s appointed auctioneer, MNP Auctioneers (Central) Sdn Bhd (MNP), the public auction was held at the central bank’s Sasana Kijang complex.
It drew a total of 214 registered online and floor bidders including those from China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia.
The session started with the bidding of banknotes with special serial numbers followed by the commemorative coins.
The banknotes and gold coins were previously issued by Bank Negara in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Federation of Malaya Independence Agreement and the installation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V, respectively.
The indicative price of each RM60 banknote was RM120 while the uncut three RM60 banknotes was RM500.
Made of gold with 999.9 purity and weighing 7.96g with a face value of RM300, the proof coins were auctioned off at an indicative price of RM4,000.
MNP Auctioneers (Central) Sdn Bhd managing director Stephen Soon said the auction achieved its record-breaking sale.
“Sale of the RM600 and RM60 commemorative banknotes was beyond our expectations.
“The commemorative gold coins sale is 39% but still beyond our expectations.
“The highest priced item sold was a RM600 commemorative banknote (serial number MRR0000088) at RM78,000 while the second highest was a RM100 denomination banknote (serial number BB8888888) at RM76,000,” Soon added.
The highest selling price of the single RM60 banknote with the serial number MRR0060000 fetched RM50,000.
The total amount of the items auctioned was RM2,398,488.
